Navigating Immigration Resources: Staying Informed and Prepared

jchav014

We are living in unpredictable times when it comes to immigration policies. With rapid changes at the federal, state and local levels, it's important more than ever for our community to stay informed and prepared. As a PTA committed to support all families, we want to provide resources that can help navigate interactions with immigration enforcement agencies and ensure the safety in our community.

Key Rights to Remember

  • Right to Remain Silent: You do not have to answer questions about your immigration status. Simply state, “I wish to remain silent.”

  • Right to Legal Representation: You have the right to speak with an attorney before answering questions, consenting to a search, or signing any documents.

  • Right to a Hearing: If facing deportation, you are entitled to a hearing before an Immigration Judge. While the government does not provide a lawyer, you can hire one.

Important Reminders:

  • Do not open your door unless law enforcement presents a warrant signed by a judge.

  • Do not sign anything without speaking to a lawyer first., as this could forfeit your rights.

  • If questioned by police, FBI, ICE, or CBP about your immigration status or a suspected crime, state that you want to speak with a lawyer and remain silent until you do.
