Hello South Shore Families,
I can not tell you all how great it has been to meet everyone. The South Shore Community is so vibrant, active and involved; it truly warms my heart. I want to thank everyone that has welcomed me and expressed interest in the ongoing process of maintaining and developing a library program that is diverse and well rounded. My goal is to service this community for a long, long time to the best of my ability. I believe that providing a progressive library program can increase student achievement across the board by challenging students with dynamic learning experiences.
One of the most important roles of the library is to put good books in students’ hands. While this library has a ton of great books, there are not a lot of current materials of high interest. I am pursuing many avenues for garnering new books that will perpetuate the already present love for reading that I see at South Shore. As I interact with the children here, I am consistently smiling and laughing while talking about books! I absolutely love that there is already a culture of reading that we can build upon.
The main struggle that I am bumping into during book checkout is that the average age for books in our collection is 2001. Students consistently ask for superhero books, books about fashion, and other topics of interest that are current. This makes sense to me because I can tell that this is not the first and only library experience our children have had. Most students speak about timely books that they can access from other libraries and it would be great to provide them with a similar experience here at South Shore.
Currently, the PTSA is providing a great deal of support for the library. I can tell already that the PTSA is a great partner and resource in the development of a collection that truly services our students and staff. I am reaching out to fundraising programs such as donorschoose.org and gofundme.com to supplement the current needs that the collection has. Also, I am accepting donations that I can sort through in order to incorporate into our collection.
I have created an amazon wish list that is geared towards high interest books while simultaneously increasing equity and diversity in the collection. I am interested in hearing all ideas for procuring new resources so please do not hesitate to stop me if you see me and what to share your thoughts! I appreciate everyone’s help as we update our collection!
